  • Summary: silly and sanctimonious
  • Comment: Not at all a comprehensive look at veganism. The author introduces silly suggestions such as vegans may want to carry fabric cushions around, to avoid sitting on leather chairs - as if that will benefit the animal that died to make the chair! The book is filled with this kind of futile tokenism.
And considering that many vegans are animal lovers and therefore have pets, the author never discusses the ethical dilemna of feeding meat to dogs and cats, who are natural carnivores. Just don't sit on those leather chairs, folks!

  • Summary: Great book for ANY level of Vegan!
  • Comment: As a health enthusiast whose friends & network are primarily people interested in feeling & being their best every day, I have found that every form of lifestyle or eating has a "dogma" stigma to it - a hey, jump on the bandwagon & you too can be a cool kid! What a turn-off to have to be perfect every moment with what you eat, according to some set of "rules."

As a mostly vegan myself (I follow ayurvedic principles & allow salmon and cold water fish into my diet), I dance around a lot with wanting to live completely vegan -- no leather purses, watching every ingredient in toiletries and household goods. Just that I'm being conscious about it -- without being "perfect" is a fabulous thing. That's the best part I like about this book ... it meets you where you are. It doesn't expect you to toss all your kitchen items out the window & buy all new vegan products. One at a time, little changes begin to form into one big change. Or many big changes even.

The format is great. The non-preaching approach is like cozy, living chat over tea with a friend. The recipes are simple ingredients (fresh, whole foods) & the topics are fun. Each chapter glides smoothly to the next so the reader isn't spending too much time on one topic. There's definitely something in here for everyone. As someone who knows a lot about veganism already, I found a lot of aha!s and wisdom nuggets in here that made me glad I picked up this book.

  • Summary: Comprehensive Guide You Can Turn To
  • Comment: I spotted this book under the New Arrivals section at the library today and immediately appreciated it for its comprehensiveness. It is very reader friendly and I can see it as being an awesome refresher or a go-to reference for the seasoned and a clear and gentle guide for one embarking upon this life-changing journey.

  • Summary: Yet another good dummies book
  • Comment: I'm into the health food movement like a lot of people nowdays. Unfortunately most books and programs don't cover all of the many ways to get and stay healthy. Although the above book listed is an excellent resource. It's like most authors and programs are trying to be too pc (politically correct). To correct myself a little, most health advice, programs, books and supplements usually offer pretty good advice these days. You know:
    1. Don't alcohol
    2. Don't abuse drugs
    3. Don't smoke (cigaretts and the like)
    4. Eat move live fresh fruits and vegetables.
    5. Eat less process foods and meats.
Now all of this is good advice, although there is a right way and wrong way to do anything. I saw an excellent book with a good 8 step plan. Search Amazon for: The Magic Of Mother Nature's Healing Foods. I liked it.

  • Summary: Comprehensive. Life-saving. Impressive.
  • Comment: This book is not only thorough, it is thoroughly enjoyable. I am calling this THE guide to a vegan lifestyle. First off, it answers the good 'ole WHY anyone should/would go vegan. Then it carefully and in a non-preachy way shows you HOW. And there are many, many solutions, ideas, great recipes, easy-access charts about where to find calcium/protein/B12, lots of fascinating research. Brilliant. Alexandra Jamieson, thank you for making it so easy to make the transition. The people, the planet and the animals thank you.
